"Maternity photoshoot" gets about 33,000 searches a month in the US alone, all year round. "Maternity photoshoot ideas" adds another 15,000, plus 5,400 in India. Most people searching are trying to choose a theme, and the usual answer is a mood board of strangers in poses that may not suit their body, their bump or the weather where they live.
These ten prompts let you see a theme on yourself first. Upload a clear photo, paste the prompt, and the model changes the setting, outfit and light while keeping your face, body and bump exactly as they are. Use the results to pick a theme, settle on an outfit, and brief your photographer.
They work in ChatGPT and Gemini. Each one has a fill-in template so you can change the outfit, location and colours without editing the prompt.
The line that protects your body and your bump
AI image models have a strong default: they slim bodies, smooth skin and quietly make bumps smaller, nudging everyone towards the same idealised figure. In a maternity photo that ruins the point. Every prompt here includes:
Keep the face, facial features, skin tone, hairstyle, body shape and the size and
shape of the bump exactly as they are — do not slim, beautify, lighten skin, or
change age.
and puts slimmed body, smaller bump, lightened skin, beautified, airbrushed in the negative prompt. Start from a photo that shows your bump clearly, side-on or three-quarters, so the model has your real shape to work from. A head-and-shoulders selfie leaves it to guess.
1. Fine-art studio silhouette
One softbox, a plain backdrop, side profile. The timeless studio maternity shot.
Edit this photo into a fine-art studio maternity portrait. [Keep the body clause]
Pose: side profile, one hand resting under the bump and the other on top, eyes closed,
chin slightly lifted.
Wardrobe: a fitted floor-length stretch-jersey gown in deep wine red with long sleeves.
Backdrop: warm charcoal, seamless.
Lighting: a single large softbox from the front-left — the light sculpting the curve of
the bump, with soft gradual falloff into shadow.
Lens: 85mm, f/2.8. Mood: calm, quiet, timeless.

Generated output. A fitted gown is what makes a silhouette work, because the outline of the bump is the whole picture. "Sculpting the curve" puts the light on the bump rather than spreading it evenly over everything.

2. Golden-hour field
The most-requested outdoor maternity shot: a flowing gown in tall grass, backlit by the low sun.
Edit this photo into an outdoor maternity photoshoot in a meadow of tall golden grass at
golden hour. [Keep the body clause]
Wardrobe: a flowing off-shoulder dusty-blue chiffon gown with a long train, the fabric
catching the breeze.
Pose: walking slowly through the grass, one hand on the bump, looking down and smiling.
Lighting: low sun behind her, rim-lighting the hair, shoulders and the outline of the
bump, with warm bounce light filling her face so it does not fall into silhouette.
Lens: 85mm, f/2. Colors: dusty blue, gold and cream, film-like.

Generated output. Rim light outlining the bump is what makes golden hour flattering. "So it does not fall into silhouette" keeps your face lit. Dusty blue against gold grass is one of the most reliable colour pairings for this shot.

3. Beach at sunset
Barefoot at the water's edge, white cotton lifting in the breeze, a wave around your ankles.
Edit this photo into a beach maternity photoshoot at sunset. [Keep the body clause]
Wardrobe: a flowing white cotton maxi dress, barefoot.
Moment: standing at the water's edge cradling the bump as a wave washes around her
ankles, looking out to sea.
Setting: a quiet tropical beach, wet sand reflecting the sky.
Lighting: the setting sun low and to the side, warm light on the face and bump, the
bright sand bouncing fill so the face stays lit.
Lens: 70mm, f/2.2. Colors: peach, white and soft gold.

Generated output. The sun is to the side here, not behind her, so the bump is lit from the front instead of turning into a dark shape against the sky. That's the most common mistake in real beach maternity photos too.

4. At home in window light
No studio, no travel, no booking: your bedroom, an oversized cardigan and the best window in the house.
Edit this photo into a relaxed at-home maternity photoshoot in a bright bedroom with white
linen sheets. [Keep the body clause]
Wardrobe: an oversized cream cable-knit cardigan over a fitted white top and soft grey
leggings.
Moment: sitting on the edge of the bed, looking down and smiling, both hands on the bump.
Lighting: soft natural window light from a large window to her left, the room falling
softly darker away from the window.
Details: a tiny folded baby outfit and a pair of knitted booties beside her on the bed.
Lens: 35mm, f/2, documentary and intimate.

Generated output. A fitted top under the open cardigan is what keeps the bump visible. The tiny booties make it unmistakably a maternity photo rather than a casual portrait. This is also the easiest look to recreate yourself on a phone with a timer.

5. Maternity couple photoshoot
Your partner's hands on the bump, foreheads close, eyes closed. Upload a photo of the two of you.
Edit this photo into a maternity couple photoshoot. Keep both people's faces, facial
features, skin tones, hairstyles and body shapes, and the size and shape of the bump,
exactly as they are — do not slim, beautify, lighten skin, or change anyone's age.
Pose: partner standing behind her with arms around her and both hands on the bump, her
hands over his, foreheads close together, eyes closed.
Wardrobe: her in a fitted sage-green knit dress, him in a cream linen shirt.
Setting: a quiet forest path in autumn with soft golden leaves.
Lens: 85mm, f/2, both faces sharp. Mood: tender, a real moment rather than a stiff pose.

Generated output. Four hands on one bump is exactly where AI usually adds an extra finger, so I checked this one at full size: two hands each, five fingers each. Always count before you share.

6. With the big brother or sister
The older child listening to the bump, wide-eyed. Often the photo families love most.
Edit this photo into a maternity family photoshoot with the older sibling.
[Keep every face and body clause]
Moment: her three-year-old daughter pressing an ear to the bump with wide surprised eyes,
the mother laughing.
Wardrobe: the mother in a soft white ribbed knit dress, the child in a tiny cream knit
sweater and tulle skirt.
Setting: a sunlit living room with plants, sitting cross-legged on a cream rug.
Lighting: soft natural window light, even on every face. Lens: 50mm, f/2.2.

Generated output. Directing the child (ear to the bump, wide eyes) gets you a real reaction instead of a posed smile. Sitting on the floor puts mother and child at the same height, so both faces are in the frame.

7. Christmas maternity photoshoot
Tree lights, a red knit dress and a tiny stocking. It doubles as a pregnancy announcement card. Searches for this rise from almost nothing to around 2,900 a month in November.
Edit this photo into a Christmas maternity photoshoot. [Keep the body clause]
Wardrobe: a fitted long-sleeve deep red knit dress.
Setting: beside a decorated Christmas tree in a cozy living room, hands on the bump,
smiling down at it.
Detail: a tiny red-and-white knitted baby stocking hanging from a branch beside her.
Lens: 85mm, f/1.8, the tree lights melting into warm bokeh.
Lighting: warm light from the tree and a lamp, soft and flattering on the face and bump.

Generated output. The tiny stocking is what turns this into a pregnancy announcement without any text. To make a card from it, see our Christmas card prompts.

8. Boho flower crown
A crochet lace dress, a crown of dried flowers and pampas grass in soft hazy light.
Edit this photo into a boho maternity photoshoot. [Keep the body clause]
Wardrobe: a long ivory crochet-lace dress.
Crown: a crown of dried flowers — pampas plumes, bunny tails, dusty-pink strawflowers and
eucalyptus, every bloom rendered individually.
Setting: in front of tall pampas grass at the edge of a dune.
Pose: one hand on the bump, the other touching the crown, eyes closed, serene.
Lighting: soft hazy late-afternoon sun. Colors: ivory, sand, dusty pink and sage.

Generated output. Naming the actual dried flowers (pampas, bunny tails, strawflowers) gives you a real boho crown. "Flower crown" alone usually produces fresh roses, which look more bridal than boho.

9. Indian maternity: saree for godh bharai
A silk saree draped to show the bump, stacked glass bangles, a jasmine gajra and a swing covered in marigolds. For a godh bharai, seemantham or valaikappu.
Edit this photo into an Indian maternity photoshoot for the godh bharai.
[Keep the body clause]
Wardrobe: a mustard-yellow silk saree with a wide magenta and gold zari border, draped to
show the bump, silk with real weight and sheen.
Styling: green and gold glass bangles stacked on both wrists, a jasmine gajra in her hair
and small gold jhumkas.
Setting: sitting on a low swing decorated with marigold and rose garlands, strings of
marigolds and a brass urli of floating flowers behind her.
Lens: 85mm, f/2. Lighting: warm soft daylight.

Generated output. "Draped to show the bump" matters, because a saree draped the usual way hides it completely. Green glass bangles are traditional for the ceremony. For a South Indian valaikappu, change the ceremony field and add more bangles.

10. Fine-art flowing fabric
The dramatic one: metres of red chiffon thrown into the wind on a clifftop, with you small in the frame.
Edit this photo into a dramatic fine-art maternity photograph. [Keep the body clause]
Wardrobe: a long sheer crimson chiffon gown, with metres of extra fabric thrown up by the
wind — the fabric frozen mid-air in a sweeping arc.
Setting: a clifftop above the sea, vast and minimal.
Composition: the figure small in the lower third, the fabric arcing across the sky.
Lens: 35mm, f/4, a fast shutter freezing the fabric.
Lighting: soft diffused overcast light. Colors: crimson against slate blue-grey sea and
sky, painterly.

Generated output. Overcast light, not sunshine: a grey sky makes the red stand out and keeps the image painterly. In a real shoot this takes an assistant throwing the fabric out of frame and many attempts. Previewing it first tells you whether it's worth the effort.

Planning the real shoot
- Book for 28–34 weeks. The bump shows clearly and you're still comfortable on your feet.
- Choose two looks, not five. One fitted, one flowing, is plenty for a single session, and changing clothes while heavily pregnant takes longer than you'd expect.
- Bring the AI previews. A reference showing you in the light and outfit you want is a better brief for a photographer than a Pinterest board of strangers.
