The complete collection of ChatGPT prompts for photo editing — 50+ tested, copy-paste templates for portrait retouching, background removal, color grading, product enhancement, and social media edits. Works with GPT-4o image editing (ChatGPT Plus).

The 60-second version

What you need before you start:

  • A ChatGPT Plus subscription ($20/month) — required for GPT-4o image editing
  • The photo you want to edit, ready to attach
  • One of the 50+ prompt templates below, matched to your edit type

The fastest universal photo editing prompt — copy it now:

prompt
Edit this photo: [describe the main change you want]. Preserve the original subject, composition, and facial identity exactly. Do not over-process or make the result look artificial. Output: natural, realistic, professional-quality edit.

For specific, reliable results — portrait retouching, color grading, background replacement — use the targeted templates in each section below.

What ChatGPT photo editing actually is (and what it isn't)

Before the prompts, one distinction that will save you a lot of frustration:

Photo editing in ChatGPT = you upload a real photo → write a prompt → ChatGPT outputs a modified version of that photo. This is what you're here for.

Image generation = you describe a scene in text → ChatGPT creates a brand-new image from scratch. This is what most other articles on this site cover — DALL-E 3, Midjourney, Flux.

These are completely different workflows. The editing capability runs on the GPT-4o model with image generation, which became available in ChatGPT Plus in late 2024 and was significantly improved with GPT Image 1.5 in 2026. If you're on the free tier, you can view images but cannot output edited versions — you'll need Plus.

How to use these prompts (step-by-step)

  1. Open chat.openai.com and ensure you're on a Plus account
  2. Start a new chat and select the GPT-4o model
  3. Click the paperclip icon (or drag your photo) to attach your image
  4. Paste one of the templates below (replacing [placeholders] with your specifics)
  5. Send and review the result
  6. Iterate in the same chat — type follow-up instructions to refine without re-uploading

Pro tip: The same conversation maintains image context. Build up your edit in multiple short steps ("good — now reduce the shadows under the eyes a bit more") rather than trying to describe everything in one massive prompt.

The Master Prompt Formula

Every strong photo editing prompt follows the same structure. Memorize this and every template below will make sense:

prompt
[Subject + preserve constraints] + [edit action] + [style / look reference] + [negative constraints]

Broken down:

  • Subject + preserve: Tell ChatGPT what's in the photo and what must not change. "A portrait of a woman in her 30s — preserve her facial identity, eye color, and natural skin texture."
  • Edit action: The specific change. "Remove the background and replace with a soft bokeh office interior."
  • Style / look reference: The aesthetic goal. "Corporate headshot quality, natural color palette, clean and professional."
  • Negative constraints: What to avoid. "Do not over-smooth the skin. Do not change the subject's hair color or style."

The more specific you are across all four components, the more reliably ChatGPT delivers what you're imagining.

Portrait Retouching Prompts

These are the highest-demand photo editing prompts — skin retouching, blemish removal, eye enhancement, and lighting corrections for people photos.

1. Natural Skin Retouching

prompt
Edit this portrait: apply natural skin retouching. Smooth minor blemishes and even out skin tone while preserving real skin texture — pores, fine lines, and natural variation should remain visible. Preserve the subject's facial identity, bone structure, and eye color exactly. Do not over-smooth to a plastic or filtered look. Output: professional headshot quality, natural and realistic.

2. Blemish and Spot Removal

prompt
Remove visible blemishes, acne spots, and temporary skin imperfections from this portrait. Do not alter permanent features (freckles, moles the subject likely has long-term, skin tone). Keep the skin looking like real human skin — texture intact. Preserve all facial features exactly. Output: clean, natural, publication-ready.

3. Eye Enhancement

prompt
Enhance the eyes in this portrait: brighten the whites slightly, add a subtle catch-light in the iris if one is missing, and sharpen the iris and lash detail. Do not change eye color or shape. Keep the enhancement subtle — the goal is natural depth and clarity, not an artificial "edited" look. Preserve everything else in the photo unchanged.

4. Under-Eye Shadow Reduction

prompt
Reduce the dark under-eye circles in this portrait. Lighten the under-eye shadow area naturally — match the lightened tone to the surrounding skin so the transition is seamless. Do not make the area look flat or painted. Preserve all other facial features, skin tone, and photo composition exactly.

5. Studio Relighting (Soft Key Light)

prompt
Relight this portrait to a soft studio key light setup: large softbox at 45 degrees to the subject, soft fill light from the opposite side reducing shadows to a 2:1 ratio. Maintain a natural, flattering look. Preserve facial identity and composition. The final result should look like a professional studio photo taken in controlled lighting.

6. Dramatic Rembrandt Portrait Relight

prompt
Apply a Rembrandt lighting regrade to this portrait: a warm key light from one side creating a small triangle of light on the shadow-side cheek, deep dramatic shadows on the opposite side. Preserve the subject's face and identity completely. Output: cinematic, editorial, slightly moody — suitable for a professional actor or speaker headshot.

7. Remove Glasses Glare

prompt
Remove the lens glare and reflections from the glasses in this portrait. Fill in the corrected area with the subject's eyes as they appear in the rest of the image — maintain eye color, shape, and natural expression. Do not alter the glasses frames. Keep the rest of the photo unchanged.

8. Hair Detail Enhancement

prompt
Sharpen and enhance the hair detail in this portrait. Improve definition in individual strands, add natural shine and depth, and clean up any flyaways at the edges. Do not change the hair color or style. Keep the enhancement realistic — natural hair, not a styled editorial look. Preserve the rest of the photo exactly.

9. Teeth Whitening

prompt
Apply subtle teeth whitening to this portrait. Lighten the teeth naturally — match the whitening to what would be achievable with professional cleaning, not an artificially bright or blue-white look. Preserve lip position, expression, and all other facial features exactly.

10. Full Professional Headshot Polish

prompt
Apply a complete professional headshot retouch to this portrait: (1) smooth minor blemishes while preserving skin texture, (2) brighten and sharpen the eyes, (3) reduce under-eye shadows, (4) even out skin tone, (5) add a soft fill light to reduce harsh shadows. Preserve facial identity, hair, and expression completely. Output: polished, natural, LinkedIn or corporate headshot quality.

Background Removal & Replacement Prompts

11. Clean White Studio Background

prompt
Remove the background from this photo and replace it with a clean, pure white studio backdrop. Keep all edges around the subject sharp and natural — pay attention to hair edges and any fine details at the boundary. Preserve the subject and their lighting exactly. Output: professional product or headshot white-background style.

12. Soft Gradient Background

prompt
Replace the background in this photo with a soft, neutral gradient — light gray at the edges fading to near-white at the center. The gradient should feel like a professional studio sweep backdrop. Keep the subject and their shadows natural. Preserve all subject details exactly.

13. Blurred (Bokeh) Background

prompt
Replace the background in this photo with a soft, blurred bokeh effect — as if shot at f/1.8 on an 85mm lens. The background blur should feel natural and photographic, not digitally smeared. Preserve the subject in sharp focus. Match the general color tone of the original background so the scene still feels cohesive.

14. Outdoor / Nature Background

prompt
Replace the background in this photo with a natural outdoor scene: [describe scene — e.g., "a sun-dappled park with soft bokeh greenery" / "a golden-hour beach with warm light"]. Match the lighting direction and color temperature on the subject to the new background. Keep subject edges natural and seamlessly integrated. Output: realistic, looks like it was shot on location.

15. Office / Professional Interior Background

prompt
Replace the background in this photo with a modern, blurred office interior — glass partitions, a hint of plants and neutral furniture, soft natural window light. The background should be out of focus (f/2 depth of field equivalent). Keep the subject sharp and naturally lit. Output: professional, suitable for corporate or LinkedIn photography.

16. Solid Color Background (Custom Color)

prompt
Remove the current background and replace it with a solid flat [color — e.g., navy blue / forest green / charcoal gray] background. Keep subject edges clean and natural. Apply a very subtle drop shadow or edge light on the subject to prevent them from looking cut-and-pasted. Output: clean, graphic, suitable for social media profile or presentation use.

17. Transparent-Look Background Removal

prompt
Remove the background from this photo as cleanly as possible, leaving only the subject. Fill the removed area with white. Pay careful attention to hair, clothing edges, and any transparent or semi-transparent areas. Output: clean subject isolation, suitable as a base for placing on any new background.

18. Environmental Context Background

prompt
Replace the background in this photo with [specific environment — e.g., "a busy New York City street, slightly blurred" / "a modern kitchen with natural light"]. Match the perspective, scale, and lighting direction to make the subject appear naturally present in that environment. Output: realistic, editorial quality.

Color Grading & Cinematic Look Prompts

These prompts apply a specific aesthetic or mood to your photo — the most popular category for social media and creative photography.

19. Teal and Orange Cinematic Grade

prompt
Apply a cinematic teal and orange color grade to this photo. Push skin tones toward warm orange. Shift shadows and mid-tones toward cool teal. Increase contrast slightly and crush the blacks for a filmic, cinematic look. Do not change the composition or subject. Output: Hollywood blockbuster color grade, dramatic and punchy.

20. Moody Dark Aesthetic

prompt
Apply a moody, dark color grade to this photo: lower overall brightness, crush the blacks, desaturate slightly except for deep blues and greens which should be rich and saturated. Reduce highlights to prevent any blown-out areas. Add a subtle cool tint to shadows. Output: editorial, atmospheric, slightly melancholic — suitable for a magazine portrait or music artist photo.

21. Golden Hour Warm Edit

prompt
Enhance this photo with a golden hour color grade: warm the overall tone toward amber and gold, add a soft directional light from one side as if from a low sun, gently lift shadows to retain detail, and add a slight lens flare effect in the corner if the composition allows. Preserve all subject details. Output: warm, luminous, magical-hour feel.

22. Film Grain & Vintage Effect

prompt
Apply a film photography look to this photo: add authentic film grain (ISO 400 equivalent — visible but not overwhelming), slightly desaturate the image, lift the blacks slightly so they never go fully black (faded film look), and add a very subtle color shift — warm in highlights, slightly green in shadows (Kodak Portra-style). Output: analog film photography, editorial, timeless.

23. Black and White Conversion (Dramatic)

prompt
Convert this photo to black and white. This is a dramatic, high-contrast conversion: deep blacks, bright highlights, strong mid-tone separation. Enhance texture in skin, clothing, and background. Keep a rich tonal range — not a flat gray conversion. Output: editorial black and white, classic portrait or street photography quality.

24. Black and White (Soft / Fine Art)

prompt
Convert this photo to a soft, fine-art black and white. Gentle contrast, lifted shadows so nothing goes fully black, smooth skin tones with retained texture, slightly hazy highlights. Output: timeless, elegant, suitable for fine art print or wedding photography.

25. Faded Matte / Lifestyle Grade

prompt
Apply a faded matte color grade to this photo: lift the blacks so shadows fade to dark gray rather than pure black, desaturate slightly, warm mid-tones, slightly lower the overall contrast. Output: airy, soft, Instagram lifestyle aesthetic — clean and fresh without being over-filtered.

26. Cool Blue / Nordic Tone

prompt
Apply a cool, Nordic color grade to this photo: push the overall tone toward cool blues and muted teals, reduce warm colors (lower orange and yellow saturation), slightly underexpose, lift shadows with a cool tint. Output: Scandinavian editorial feel — quiet, cold, atmospheric.

27. Vibrant Pop / Social Media Edit

prompt
Apply a vibrant, punchy color grade to this photo for social media: boost overall saturation, increase contrast, make blues deeply saturated, make skin tones warm and glowing. Sharpen the image slightly. Output: bold, scroll-stopping, high-energy — suitable for Instagram feed or YouTube thumbnail.

28. Sunset / Orange Hour Enhancement

prompt
Enhance the sunset colors in this photo: deepen the oranges and reds, add warm pink tones to the clouds, increase the richness of the sky gradient, and add a subtle warm glow to any subject in the foreground. Do not blow out the highlights. Output: dramatic, saturated, beautiful sunset photography.

Product Photo Enhancement Prompts

prompt
Edit this product photo: (1) replace the background with a pure white studio background, (2) remove any shadows underneath the product, (3) even out the lighting so the product is uniformly and flatly lit, (4) sharpen product detail and color. Output: clean, bright, Amazon or Shopify listing quality — ready to use without further editing.

30. Natural Shadow Addition

prompt
Add a soft, natural drop shadow to the product in this photo. The shadow should fall slightly to the [left/right] and below the product, as if lit from the upper [left/right]. Keep the shadow soft and realistic — not a hard cut-out shadow. Output: professional product photography with ground-plane shadow that prevents the product from floating.

31. Product Color Correction

prompt
Color-correct this product photo so the product color is accurate and true-to-life. Remove any color cast from the original lighting (warm yellow cast from indoor lighting, blue cast from overcast daylight, etc.). Make the product colors match what you would see in person under neutral white light. Output: color-accurate, neutral, professional.

32. Lifestyle Context Addition

prompt
Place this product naturally into a lifestyle setting: [describe setting — e.g., "a clean wooden kitchen counter with soft natural light from a window to the left" / "a marble bathroom shelf with soft morning light"]. The product should appear naturally staged — not floating or cut-and-pasted. Match the lighting and perspective. Output: lifestyle product photography suitable for brand campaigns.

33. Product Reflection Surface

prompt
Edit this product photo to add a reflective surface beneath the product — a polished white or black surface with a subtle, faded reflection of the product below. Background should remain [white/dark gray/black]. Output: luxury product photography style, high-end cosmetics or tech product feel.

34. Multiple Angles Collage Layout

prompt
Create a clean product showcase layout from this single product photo: show the product at [front/back/side] angles arranged in a grid on a white background. The product should appear consistently lit and scaled across all positions. Output: e-commerce product sheet layout, ready for listing or catalog use.

35. Damage and Scratch Removal (Product)

36. Packaging Mockup Enhancement

prompt
Edit this product packaging / box photo: straighten any perspective distortion, even out the lighting across the label (remove harsh shadows or hot spots), sharpen the text and logo, and enhance colors to be vivid and accurate. Output: professional, print-ready packaging photography quality.

Social Media & Content Creator Prompts

37. Instagram Portrait Edit

prompt
Edit this portrait for Instagram: apply a warm, glowing color grade (lifted shadows, warm skin tones, slightly boosted saturation), smooth skin naturally while preserving texture, sharpen the eyes, and crop to a 4:5 ratio if the composition allows. Output: polished Instagram portrait — natural but clearly edited, high engagement aesthetic.

38. YouTube Thumbnail Face Enhancement

prompt
Edit this photo for use as a YouTube thumbnail: boost brightness and contrast significantly so it reads clearly at small sizes, slightly widen and sharpen the eyes, enhance expression contrast (make the most expressive part of the face pop), apply bold, punchy color. Output: high-contrast, eye-catching, optimized for 1280x720 thumbnail format.

39. LinkedIn Professional Headshot

prompt
Edit this photo into a professional LinkedIn headshot: apply a natural retouching (smooth minor blemishes, even skin tone), enhance the background to a soft neutral blur (office or neutral gradient), ensure the subject is well and evenly lit, slightly brighten the overall image. Output: approachable, professional, trustworthy — suitable for a senior professional profile.

40. Dark Moody Editorial (Social / Press)

prompt
Apply a dark, editorial color grade to this photo suitable for press coverage or music/fashion social media: rich blacks, deep shadows, slight desaturation keeping only one dominant color (e.g., skin warmth, or a single color in clothing/background), add a hint of film grain. Output: editorial magazine quality, high contrast, memorable.

41. Before/After Split Edit

prompt
Edit this photo to demonstrate a clear before/after transformation: apply [specific edit — e.g., "a full skin retouch and color grade"] to the right half of the image while keeping the left half exactly as the original. Draw a subtle vertical split line in the center. Output: before/after comparison image suitable for social media or portfolio.

42. Consistent Brand Filter

prompt
Apply a consistent brand color filter to this photo to match the following brand aesthetic: [describe — e.g., "warm, earthy tones, slightly faded, natural and organic feel" / "cool, minimalist, high contrast, clean whites and deep blues"]. Output: brand-consistent color treatment that would look cohesive alongside other photos in this visual identity.

43. Story Format Crop and Blur

prompt
Reformat this photo for Instagram/TikTok Stories (9:16 vertical format): crop the image to portrait orientation keeping the subject centered. If the original is too wide, extend the top and bottom with a blurred, extended version of the image edges to fill the frame (blurred background fill technique). Output: full 9:16 vertical frame with no white bars.

44. Event / Conference Photo Enhancement

prompt
Enhance this event or conference photo: correct exposure (many event photos are underexposed), reduce noise from high-ISO indoor shooting, sharpen subject faces, even out any color casts from mixed venue lighting. Output: clean, professional event photo suitable for PR or company social media use.

48. Night / Blue Hour Enhancement

prompt
Enhance this night or blue-hour photo: reduce noise while preserving point light sources (city lights, stars, lamp posts), deepen the blues of the sky, balance the exposure between the bright lights and darker areas (HDR-style balance), add a soft glow to any practical light sources. Output: dramatic, atmospheric night photography.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Vague instructions "Make this photo better" produces a random result. Be specific: what should change, what should stay the same.

2. Forgetting preserve constraints Without "preserve facial identity" in a portrait edit, ChatGPT may drift the subject's appearance. Always include what must not change.

3. Asking for too many changes at once Complex multi-step edits in one prompt sometimes produce inconsistent results. Build up the edit in 2–3 conversation turns for more reliable output.

4. Expecting Photoshop precision ChatGPT is excellent at interpretive edits (color grades, mood, retouching). It is less reliable for precise, pixel-level selections — complex hair cutouts, object removal with intricate backgrounds, or exact typographic overlays are still better in dedicated tools.

5. Not iterating The first result is rarely final. The real power of ChatGPT photo editing is the conversation loop — respond to the result with specific corrections and the model improves its output quickly.

All prompts in this guide are tested with GPT-4o (ChatGPT Plus) as of May 2026. Results may vary with model updates — iterate using the conversation loop for best output.
